Should I sell merchandise and lower-priced items, or does that cheapen my fine art?

Merchandise absolutely does not cheapen you. Find a museum that doesn’t have a gift shop—they all have them. Merchandise serves multiple critical purposes: it creates impulse purchases (people don’t need to measure walls or consult spouses), it gets your art into people’s daily lives as a ‘beachhead’ (a coffee mug they see every morning, a phone case picked up 163 times per day), and it dramatically expands your customer acquisition. Art is not an impulse purchase, but merchandise is. Lower-priced items also allow you to capture customers who like your work but aren’t currently in the market for expensive pieces. Master sellers turn one image into 180-220 different products across all price points.
