What should an artist's website look like to be effective at selling art?
Your website needs to mimic the paradigm of how art is viewed and sold in the real world—in art galleries and museums. Every gallery worldwide looks the same: monochromatic walls (usually white), light on the art, and nothing else. No distractions. Your website should be minimalist and duplicate the experience of walking into an art gallery. The problem is that artists and photographers understand composition, framing, and color, so they treat their website like a blank canvas or photograph to frame. They add colors, fonts, goofy slideshows, and all kinds of text, making it nearly impossible for anyone to actually see the art. Keep it simple and gallery-like.
