What makes artists and photographers different from other professionals when it comes to retirement and their careers?
Artists and photographers are wired completely differently from other professionals. A marketing person might retire and take up gardening or cooking, but artists aren’t built that way. People routinely show up in their 70s, 80s, 90s, and sometimes over 100 years old asking for advice on how to get their art in front of eyeballs and sell it. That’s not normal—it’s a unique feature of how creators are wired. For most artists, this means there are potentially 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, or 70 years left to get the business right. You’re never going to stop creating, which is why it’s so worth it to get your house in order, start treating it like a business, and get on a path where it’s actually growing.
