How important is the story behind the artwork in making sales?
The story is everything. Art sales are not a meritocracy based purely on the quality of the work. Van Gogh’s entire collection was shown in a Paris salon and nothing sold—not one piece. Then his brother’s widow published a book of letters Van Gogh had written about each piece, telling the stories behind them. That book became a bestseller and suddenly you have one of the most valuable collections in the world. The emotional connection created by story is what drives sales, not just the visual quality of the work.
