What should I expect in terms of time horizon for building a successful art business?

You need to think in terms of decades, not months. Artists will be creating for the rest of their lives—whether that’s 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, or even 70 years remaining. People in their 70s, 80s, and 90s continue to seek ways to sell their art because the creative drive never stops. Understanding this long time horizon is critical because it changes how you think about the work. Instead of asking ‘What will my business look like in 3 or 6 months?’ you should ask ‘What will it look like in 5 years?’ This perspective makes it easier to do the marketing work you don’t enjoy, because you understand you’re building something for the long term. Some years will be great vintages with strong sales, other years life will happen and you’ll have setbacks, but the grapes will regrow and you’ll have another chance next year.
